1873 Alumni Speaker Series with Mike Higley '80

Mike is a recently retired Vice President of Sub-Sahara Africa for FedEx Express. Having moved to South Africa to lead the Supaswift acquisition in 2014, Mike was at the forefront of the first FedEx legal entity being created on the African continent. While living in Johannesburg, South Africa, he led a team that managed operations in 52 countries across East, West and South Africa. He was responsible for providing strategic direction and overseeing the company's operations and expansion in the region. In addition to Mike managing the operations of Sub-Sahara Africa, Mike played a key role in the 2016 FedEx acquisition of TNT Worldwide and subsequent integration into FedEx.

His journey with FedEx Express began in 1982 in Alabama, working in station operations. Mike held a number of roles within FedEx Express throughout the U.S., including Managing Director U.S. International, where he was responsible for the company's U.S. export business. He also held a number of positions for FedEx Express in South America and Europe before he relocated to South Africa in 2014 as Managing Director of Operations. In 2017, he was promoted to Vice President for Sub-Sahara Africa.

To support the overall growth strategy for Africa, Mike was heavily involved with initiatives that focused on Governance, Compliance, Code of Conduct as well as other aspects of Ethical business practices and leadership.

Throughout Mike's career, he was involved with numerous organizations in the many communities where he and his family lived. These include: Purdue University Department of Aviation, Denver United Way, State of Washington Air Transportation Commission, Alaska World Trade Center, Anchorage Economic Development Corporation and MidSouth Airshow Foundation in Memphis Tennessee.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Science-Criminal Justice Degree from the University of North Georgia, and a Master of Science-Management Degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. He is currently serving as an Executive Consultant at the Center for Ethical Leadership within the Mike Cottrell College of Business. Mike is also an Executive in Residence and on the Advisory Board for the Mike Cottrell College of Business at the University of North Georgia.
