1873 Alumni Speaker Series with LTG (Ret) James Terry '78

Lieutenant General (Ret) James Terry earned Business Administration degrees in management and marketing from UNG and commissioned as a U.S. Army Infantry officer upon his graduation in 1978. He commanded at multiple levels across the Army including commanding general of the United States Army Central, commander of the V Corps, commander of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, and Commander of the 10th Mountain Division. Most recently LTG Terry commanded the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, where he led all coalition operations against ISIS. He retired in January 2016 after an extensive and exemplary career, during which he had eight operational deployments, to include Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Haiti, and the Sinai. Some of LTG Terry’s awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal. He also received the Combat Action Badge, the Expert Infantryman, Parachutist & Air Assault Badges, and the Ranger Tab. For his remarkable accomplishments, distinguished military career and dedication to UNG, LTG Terry was recognized by UNG and the Alumni Association in 2014 with the Distinguished Alumni Award. The University of North Georgia also presented him with the the 2016 Presidential Leadership Award.

LTG Terry also serves on the board for several organizations to include two Cubic Joint Ventures, one in the United Arab Emirates, and the other in Qatar, the Cubic Mission Solutions Executive Advisory Board, and the Camaraderie Foundation Advisory Board which is an Orlando non-profit organization that supports post 9/11 Veterans who struggle. He also currently serves on the UNG Alumni Association Board.

LTG Terry and his wife, Julie reside in Orlando and have been married for over 41 years. They have three children and four grandchildren.
