1873 Speaker Series - Stormy Marlowe Orlin ‘14

Speaker Stormy Orlin graduated in 2014 with a BBA in Management from UNG. Upon graduation, the technology industry immediately became her area of career focus. She started with YikYak, a social media start-up out of Atlanta and traveled the country on a tour bus with five other colleagues in a grassroots effort to increase usage and momentum for the mobile app. She was then offered a position that handled on-air ads and commercial placements at Fox Sports. This allowed her to briefly settle in the Atlanta area.

While Stormy found the perks of the Fox Sports gig entertaining, she desperately wanted to re-enter the technology space. For the next several years, she worked for both education and financial technology companies throughout the Atlanta area as a Product Manager. She managed software development teams where they set the vision and strategy for websites, apps or products at hand. Though she found quick success and upward movement in her field, Stormy began to feel pulled to serve her community in a hands-on way. While interviewing at Tesla, which would move she and her husband George across the country to California, she decided the time for change was immediate. With the support of her husband and family, her focus shifted from technology companies to medical school.

After successfully completing a post-baccalaureate, pre-med program at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Stormy is now entering her second year of medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. She is currently working with amputees, helping patients learn to adjust to life with prosthetics and new ways of mobility. As future for plans, she sees herself in the surgical field, integrated fully with her community, as well as helping wounded military and veterans in some medical capacity.

During her time at UNG, Stormy worked on campus at the print shop during all four years of her undergraduate education. She attributes much of her success to the lessons learned while working on campus. Specifically, she credits Wendy Gerheim, her manager who pushed her outside of her comfort zone in urging her to explore graphic design skills on the job. The skillset practiced, explored and encouraged at UNG supported her acquisition of her very first IT job.

Stormy and her husband George Orlin met during their freshman year at UNG where they spent four years as close friends. After graduation, they moved to Atlanta. Over the next several years, their friendship evolved into much more, and they were married in February of 2017. Stormy and George now live in Macon where she attends MUSM, and he works remotely for Facebook.
