Mallory Smith, Ph.D.

Mallory Smith, Ph.D. is the Assistant Director of Foundation Relations at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center where she helps scientists secure philanthropic research grants and fellowships. Since graduating from UNG with a B.S. in chemistry in 2014, Mallory pursued her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Kansas Medical Center where she studied how DNA damage can initiate and progress cancer at the atomic level. After her Ph.D., Mallory trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.  Through her scientific training, Dr. Smith became passionate about supporting the next generation of scientists, leading efforts to improve scientific training policies through grassroots and professional advocacy.

Before joining Fred Hutch, her work at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology significantly improved U.S. research policy by (1) securing $10 million for programs that train scientists from historically excluded groups and (2) creating a new optional statement for NIH training fellowship applications to combat bias against scientists with non-traditional career paths. Mallory also volunteers as chair of the National Postdoctoral Association Advocacy Committee, where she leads efforts to improve scientific training environments for U.S. postdoctoral research scholars across the nation. In her free time, Dr. Smith creates ceramic pottery and goes to the dog park with her fiancé and their red golden retriever, Duke.
